A therapist should be genuinely curious about those reasons why someone might struggle with change, in spite of the difficulties they experience in the status quo. When a person explores those underlying reasons, transformation is possible, achievable, and a completely realistic goal as long as that person is open to the possibilities of change.

There can be many goals for the counseling relationship. These can be long term goals such as improving the quality of your life, enhancing your relationship with your spouse, or adding meaning and purpose to your daily routine to improve your overall mental and physical well being. Others may be more specific or urgent goals such as decreasing anxiety and depression symptoms, preventing a marriage from ending, changing unwanted behavior, or decreasing/ending drug use. Whatever the goals for counseling, they will be explored by collaboratively working with you according to what you want to achieve. It is the role of the counselor to help you arrive at decisions to support your agenda, As the person receiving counseling, it is up to you to decide how and where to go in your counseling journey.
